Qadisha (Kadisha) Valley, Bcharre
Visit the World Heritage Site of Qadisha (Kadisha) Valley to marvel at spectacular scenery carved by the Kadisha River. Due to its inaccessibility, the valley has offered sanctuary to Christian monastic communities for hundreds of years. As you explore the area, you will come across some of Lebanon's earliest cave churches and monasteries. Follow paths through terraced fields, brimming with olive and fruit trees, and pass by picturesque stone houses. We went in February and the temperature was something fresh and it rained quite a bit, which "Afeó" a little visit. The route you can start from Bsharri, down a road to the valley, and from there you go down a path, visiting the caves, hermitages, monasteries you're finding. The truth is that signage leaves a lot to be desired, for my liking. On the way you see signs of some hermitage and then you have to go up in that direction. Then you have to go back down, because the roads are cut. That is to say that every time you go up you have to come back down if you don't want to lose yourself in the valley. We asked for a map at the tourist office, but it is very schematic. The girl also let us take some pictures to another plane that have them, which is more detailed (you'll find it later in one of the monasteries). In any case, if you go in winter it carries water and food, because there are no restaurants open at that time. To go back to Bsharri, or you get off the road, or you call a taxi from the town to finish the route.
I would not rate it as number 1 attraction in Lebanon, but I'd say it is worth to go there if you have the time! 2h from Beirut by public transportation. And you will enjoy majestic views, maybe even ... more »
