Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George, Beirut

4.7
The oldest still-active church in Beirut, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George serves as the seat of the city’s Greek Orthodox Bishop. Built in the 18th century in place of the ruins of an ancient church, it was restored several times throughout the centuries and reopened in 2003, after being vandalized in the civil war. During the restorations in the 1990s, an array of artifacts were excavated from the area, ranging from the Roman and Byzantine times to relics from the Ottoman empire. Step inside to admire the frescoes and paintings of the interior, or visit the crypt where the archaeological findings are housed. • The cathedral is slightly hidden--close to the central square and clock tower near the parliament building. It is quiet and beautiful. It's free to visit and adds another perspective to Beirut.  more »
