Sumhuram Old City, Salalah

4.4
#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Dhofar Governorate
Creating a picturesque scene, the off-white ruins of Sumhuram Old City sit atop a small hill, once enclosed by limestone walls and overlooking the Wadi Darbat River. The city was a major port in its heyday, but was abandoned 500-600 years after its founding in the the first century. Passing through a small gateway into the surprisingly dense city ruins, you’ll come across inscriptions about the city's founding in ancient Arabic, along with what remains of the city's commercial, religious, and residential districts. Visit the nearby museum for information on frankincense and the area's ancient trade routes. • I visited the ruins of the ancient city of Sumhuram as part of an organized tour. In recent times the remains of this ancient settlement that already a few centuries before the birth of Christ was an important port for incense trade, of which the Dhofar region is always rich. As it is a recently opened site, I would say it is kept pretty well. There are some information panels that describe the structures present and provide a minimal historical framing, although perhaps improvements could be made in this respect. Compared to other similar excavations, the wall structures of the fortified town, the remains of the well, the living areas and the workshops are quite well preserved. There are no religious "spectacular" monuments or large palaces, but the historical interest is certainly discreet (in fact this site is part of the Unesco heritage). The location of the town from a landscapepoint, overlooking a hill overlooking a natural harbour in which - in the distance - you can see beautiful pink flamingos - is beautiful. Overall it is definitely worth a short visit.
