A treasure of the past in the heart of the Southern Capital, the Galle Fort is an iconic structure that was originally built by the Portuguese and later developed by the Dutch. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Fort attracts thousands of tourists from around the world throughout the year. The Galle Dutch Hospital, remains to date at the historical Dutch Fort as a structure that emanates a truly unique architectural character and charm, even amidst destruction. As one of its latest projects the Urban Development Authority has initiated the refurbishment of the old Galle Dutch Hospital, transforming it into a striking new shopping complex. This union of old world charm and modern sophistication will house 21 exclusive stores featuring world renowned brands that offer a unique collection of products including handicrafts, paintings, spices and jewellery coupled with a wide offering of restaurants and cafes. Once completed this unique structure will stand proud; inspiring generations of Sri Lankans, as a testament to the times gone by and as hope for many prosperous years to come.

    A nice colonade of shops, bars etc. Worth looking at whilst you are walking around town. There is a pleasant bar on the sea side of the building where one can stop for a cooling drink.  more »
