The Grosse Scheidegg is a mountain pass in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, The pass crosses the col between the Schwarzhorn and the Wetterhorn mountains at an elevation of 1962m.
The pass is traversed by a road connecting the town of Meiringen, at an elevation of 595m, with the village of Grindelwald, at an elevation of 1034m. The road is closed to most traffic, but is used by a PostBus Switzerland service from Grindelwald to the summit of the pass, with some buses continuing to Meiringen. Bus services operate between May and October, with between four and ten buses a day depending on time of year and section of the route. Hiking over the pass is popular, and it forms part of the cross-country Alpine Pass Route between Sargans and Montreux.
From the Meiringen side, the approach to the pass runs through the valley of the Reichenbach stream above the Reichenbach Falls, best known as the place of the last fight between Holmes and Moriarty. The falls can be visited from the pass road, or by using the Reichenbachfall Funicular from the valley bottom.

  • I loved this city, I changed the hotel and stayed for an additional night and took a simple hike. Luckily, mid-October was the last autumn weather of the day before the snowfall. I took the Grindelwald bus from the station to the village, and reached the end of the growth Scheidegg. On the way, a steep hill, a narrow path impossible to cross, and less than 40 minutes between them were thrilling, and out window gleefully to the spectacle completely different from the Eiger seen from the town. My wife was so bad that I could not say hiking, so I walked around the mountain pass and went back to the bus. It was nice to have extended overnight.

  • A great bike ride. Amazing views. The swim in the lake at the end was the perfect finish to the perfect day. What a place!
  • Even the Bernese Oberland can hardly present itself more beautifully. The traffic-calmed route is absolutely fantastic for a bike tour. This pass is blocked for general car traffic. Only the Postbus with its classical horn concerto sometimes penetrates the majestic silence. If you want to discover the Swiss Alps by bike, you simply have to ride up there.
