The commercial capital of the country, Colombo has added modern touches to its colonial-era core, creating an exciting and eclectic coastal city.
Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Colombo: Negombo Beach (in Negombo) and See Lanka Travels (in Waikkal). Spend the 18th (Mon) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. Palm-fringed beaches with golden sand, turquoise water, and a colorful coral reef are enough to draw any beachgoer to Unawatuna, but there's plenty to do off the beach here as well.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Unawatuna: Bentota Beach (in Bentota), Hikkaduwa Beach (in Hikkaduwa) and Mirissa Beach (in Mirissa). There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Galle Fort, relax and rejuvenate at some of the top local wellness centers, take in the spiritual surroundings of Unawatuna Devol Devalaya, and kick back and relax at Jungle Beach.

Getting from Colombo to Unawatuna by car takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or do a combination of taxi and bus. January in Unawatuna sees daily highs of 37°C and lows of 27°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Fri) early enough to travel to Kandy.
