Create an itinerary including Millennium Elephant Foundation
Take a walk with elephants at Millennium Elephant Foundation, a 6 hectare (15 acre) rescue and rehabilitation center dedicated to caring for these majestic creatures. Captive elephants in Sri Lanka are common--they're often not only used as a sign of wealth and as tourist attractions, but also as labor for the logging industry. This foundation raises awareness about elephant mistreatment and promotes the phasing out of elephant rides and the ban of Howdah elephant chairs. After a stroll with these mighty creatures, help an elephant relax in a refreshing river bath. Volunteers as well as tourists are welcome at the foundation. Put Millennium Elephant Foundation on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Kegalle trip planner.

  • Once in a lifetime experience. We spent so much time up close with our elephant it was magical. It's important to understand that when sticks and straps are used it is because it is necessary and not cruel. The elephants are treated very well here and clearly very happy bathing in the water all day. P.S if you want the full bath experience, bring a spare change of clothes!
  • Beautiful family run foundation. Very informative and friendly. It’s so nice to see how well looked after the elephants are. It’s a very intimate, humbling experience. Perfect amount of time up close with these gentle giants. Recommend an ethical place like this as many in the area are apparently not
