Its summit is home to the central communications array of the Government of Sri Lanka and armed forces, and serves as an important point in the country's radar system. The peak is currently designated as an "Ultra-high security zone", and is protected by a large military base; being strictly off limits to the general public.
On 1 March 2010, a small wildfire broke out over the mountain's forest cover. The fire destroyed 3acres of forest, before being doused by the Sri Lanka Air Force and nearly 300 local residents.

This is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. Mountain is maintained by Air Force Unit (SLAF). The breathtaking views is worth the climb.less then 2 km from Nuwaraeliya. You cannot enter to the piduruthalagala forest reserve without a permission. We got a permission to enter the reserve for my research study. We got help from Air Force soldiers and they were so friendly. Even they gave a truck to our ride. A wonderful place with a unique environment and we were so lucky to see this unique nature. Leave only footprints 🍃🍁

Nice place to explore.Thrilling with high wind. Protected area so you need to get permission and have proper gears. It's like freezing when you go higher and higher. Visit, enjoy, hike but please keep it clean don't litter. Nice view from top of the hills. Limited access to surrounding since it is high secured area.
