Uncover the remnants of an ancient kingdom at Polonnaruwa, a World Heritage Site dating back to the 8th century. Once the royal city of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, the second oldest of Sri Lanka's ancient kingdoms, the city was first declared capital in 1070 by King Vijayabahu. Wind your way around the temple ruins, tombs, and statues stretching over 4 km (2.5 mi) and surrounded by light woodland and echoes of ancient gardens. Bring water and wear footwear suited to uneven terrain. Use our Polonnaruwa trip maker website to add Polonnaruwa and other attractions to your Polonnaruwa vacation plans.

  • Well preserved ancient city with lots of ruins. Well maintained the ancient city premises. A vehicle charged 50/- for entrance. You can travel through those amazing ruins with your own vehicle. But it is highly recommend to rent a bicycle and travel by it.
  • Loved the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa. We have chosen to explore it on bicycle, which we rented from our host. We highly enjoyed it in this way as we didn’t spend that much time walking from place to place, but still got some exercise in :) It’s an impressive location for sure that we would highly recommend not skipping.
