Create an itinerary including Sigiriya Fortress
Visit the historic complex of Sigiriya Fortress, an ancient city centered around a massive stone plateau. King Kasyapa selected the spot to be the nation’s capital in the 5th century, and built his palace on top of the enormous, 200 m (660 ft) tall rock. You’ll need to climb more than a thousand steps to reach the summit and admire the ruins of Sri Lanka’s oldest palace. Peer over the edge to observe the gardens below, a marvel of urban planning, featuring still-functional fountains. Along the way, you can see the remains of the gate--once shaped like a lion’s head--as well as numerous ancient frescoes. Put Sigiriya Fortress on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Sigiriya itinerary app.

  • Wonderful rock after the entrance appeared, its very amazing to take a look at garden around, beautiful one and lots of monkey playing there, be sure to buy water after entrance, because there isn't any in the way up, you can buy from the shop right side of the main road, very near and no need to pay somebody around, asking you money to go and find for you! More Beautiful spectacular as high as you climb the stairs, highly recommended to climb, although there is no special architecture remain but the view is great, of course be sure to visit painting on the wall. bring extra mask, because of sweating it's become wet
  • Amazing and a must do when in the area. Fascinating history and lots to see. Quite a trek, including many steps to a great view. You don't necessarily need a guide, but why not make someone's day and hire them? Around 3-4k got me a decent chat and lots of questions answered. There is a refreshment area at the base. Take water as it's often a hot climb!
