Merida — 19 nights

Yucatan's busy capital, Merida remains a mid-sized urban center offering an impressive list of cultural activities, eclectic nightlife, and a chance to see tropical examples of French and Italian architecture.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Chichen Itza and Cathedral de Merida. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Playa Norte Celestun and Isla Arena (Isla del Sabalo). Change things up with these side-trips from Merida: Celestun (Mangroves of Dzinitun & Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve), Chichen Itza (The Ossuary & Cenote Ik kil) and Hacienda Yaxcopoil (in Yaxcopoil). Spend the 18th (Fri) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Zona Arqueologica Uxmal, pause for some serene contemplation at Convento de San Antonio de Padua, get engrossed in the history at Museo Regional de Yucatán, Palacio Cantón, and explore the ancient world of Mayapan Archaeological Zone.

To find photos, traveler tips, other places to visit, and other tourist information, refer to the Merida trip planner.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiport is Licenciado Manuel Crescencio Rejon Int Airport. In January, daytime highs in Merida are 85°F, while nighttime lows are 65°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Fri) to allow enough time to travel back home.
