Create an itinerary including Muir Woods National Monument
Just a short drive north of San Francisco, Muir Woods National Monument protects a pristine area of about 97 hectares (240 acres) of old-growth redwood forest. Walk among the giant trees, which are some of the tallest living things on the planet. You can choose from several trails, ranging in length and difficulty. For an easy hike through a grove of trees nearly a millennium old, take the short main trail loop. If you feel a little more adventurous, put on pair of good hiking shoes and take the 3 km (2 mi) trail to the top of "Cardiac Hill," which offers unobstructed views of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean. • Nice walking paths. Did not really like the reserved parking times, only because we weren’t sure how long it would take to get there depending on traffic.

  • Gorgeous place to walk around and see giant tall red wood trees! A really kid/elder friendly park, very walkable. You can easily spend 3 hours here. Worth checking it out! Definitely reserve parking online at least the day before. Also, bring your annual national park pass if you have one, so you can get in for free.
  • My favorite natural location around San Francisco. I've been here a few times and each time is just as incredible and inspiring as the last. There are quite a few longer hikes accessible from the main Muir woods visitor center but there's also flat boardwalk trails for people in any shape. It's usually pretty cool in the trees so make sure to bring a jacket. You have to make a reservation to guarantee a parking spot but then the entrance can be covered with an America the Beautiful pass or a fee.
